Arya crossed her arms against her chest. “Valar morghulis,” she said, as loud as if she'd known what it meant.
“Valar dohaeris,” he replied, touching his brow with two fingers. “Of course you shall have a cabin.”
–George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords
Valar Dohaeris, the second Chapter Pack from the Beyond the Narrow Sea cycle for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, is now available at retailers everywhere!
Beyond the Narrow Sea, the Great Houses of Westeros face terrific new challenges. Valar Dohaeris introduces four new River plots. Each of these River plots has an ability that triggers when it’s revealed and that triggers the “when revealed” of the topmost River plot in your used pile, carrying your games down the currents of the Rhoyne.
Meanwhile, the Eastern continent of Essos can prove an unpredictable place, and Valar Dohaeris rewards those Houses that don’t tie themselves too strongly to agendas devised in Westeros. Shireen Baratheon and Quentyn Martell appear as characters who can become agendas, and Damon Dance-For-Me (Valar Dohaeris, 21) gains renown if you don’t have an agenda, then becomes stealthier and deadlier if your opponent does.
Seizing Every Opportunity
The Beyond the Narrow Sea cycle draws heavily from George R.R. Martin’s fourth and fifth novels in the A Song of Ice and Fire saga, and Valar Dohaeris gives us a new version of Victarion Greyjoy (Valar Dohaeris, 28) truly committed to making the most of the strength of his fleet as he pursues his individual goals.
House Greyjoy has long relied upon the strength of their Warships to win challenges, control their opponents’ locations, and gain control of their own locations more efficiently. Already, a number of strong tournament decks have recently made good use of Naval Escorts (A Sword in the Darkness, 48), Scouting Vessels (Kings of the Sea, 29), and River Blockades (Rituals of R’hllor, 32). Now, Victarion gives each of these vessels double purpose, as he allows you to benefit from their original purpose and then benefit from them again by gaining strength from each of the Warships that you’ve knelt.

Still, we know that in A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, all men can die. Without the protection of the Noble crest and The Power of Blood (Core Set, 194), Victarion remains a potential target for Military claim, direct kill effects, and Targaryen burn. Fortunately, House Greyjoy excels at saving its characters, and in Valar Dohaeris, they gain yet another strong card for preventing kills, the red priest of R’hllor, Moqorro (Valar Dohaeris, 29).
Victarion’s crewmen feared Moqorro, his faith, and his magic, and he can turn Victarion into a truly intimidating Ironborn Lord. Just the idea that Moqorro could grant an additional two strength and Intimidate to another character may be enough to cause your opponents to forsake their Military challenges. Greyjoy are capable of stringing together surprising runs of challenges with cards like Assault of the Kraken (Kings of the Sea, 17), and if Victarion were to make a rush for power with the Support of Harlaw (Kings of the Sea, 21), one little slip on your opponent’s side could spell his doom.
