The House of Black and White introduces sixty new cards (three copies each of twenty different cards) that further enrich the Beyond the Narrow Sea cycle and its exploration of the people, places, and events of Essos. You’ll find deadly new tools to cut through your opponents’ non-unique minions, a host of high-impact new locations for each House, and an arsenal of Weapons and other attachments.
Though all characters must eventually find their way to the Many-Faced God, some may first live in such a way as to merit a song, or to shape the conquest of Westeros. The new cards from The House of Black and White vividly delineate the distinction between champion and chattel.
Those Who Play, and Those Who Are Played
George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire, is a sweeping epic that details the machinations of several Houses and spans both years and continents. However, it is simultaneously an intimately personal tale that traces the impacts that the story’s key events make upon its main characters. Some die. All change.
Certainly, Arya Stark’s personal journey is one of dramatic change. When the story opens, Arya lives a life of relative peace and comfort as the young daughter of a high lord, but after many of her friends and family members are brutally slain, she wanders Westeros in disguise and under assumed names, frightened, vulnerable, and filled with a hunger for revenge. This hunger for revenge eventually led her to the House of Black and White, a temple to the Many-Faced God of death, and home to the assassins who would teach her their trade.
The House of Black and White introduces two highly thematic new cards that depict Arya’s transition from victim to assassin, I Am No One (The House of Black and White, 84) and Poisoned Coin (The House of Black and White, 83). Not only do they help to relate how Arya Stark began her transition from pawn to player, but they give fans of House Stark new tools with which to defeat their foes.
I Am No One can accelerate a House Tully deck by allowing The Blackfish (Lords of Winter, 22) to claim two of the three power he needs to attack without kneeling. The Blackfish may be the most obvious target among House Stark’s unique characters, but Cat o’ the Canals (Refugees of War, 84) is another excellent candidate since her immunity to your opponent’s card effects offers tremendous protection to any power she claims.
Meanwhile, the assassin’s Poisoned Coin means a swift and sudden death to any who receive it. At a mere one cost for a kill and a card draw, the Poisoned Coin is a good deal, forcing your opponent to make a choice between kneeling the attached character to help win a challenge or keep the character standing long enough to draw into his attachment control. Poisoned Coin becomes even better when you run it against a deck full of characters who can stand themselves, such as King Robert Baratheon (The Tower of the Hand, 46) and Killer of the Wounded (Queen of Dragons, 16), and it makes for a fine, unpredictable kill when you can first catch your opponent’s character off-guard with a Distraction (Core Set, 155). In the end, though, the Poisoned Coin is an assassin’s tool, not a knight’s, and a budding House Stark assassin may be able to use it to coordinate some truly subtle, elaborate, and effective combinations, especially in a deck running The Kindly Man (Valar Morghulis, 1).
