Download the New FAQ and Tourney Rules for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game

The FFG World Championship Weekend and the ultimate battle for the Iron Throne are fast approaching! Get the information you need to triumph on the field of battle with the updated A Game of Thrones: The Card Game FAQ (pdf, 16 MB) and Tourney Rules (pdf, 1.6 MB). Developers Nate French and Damon Stone introduce the most significant changes below!

A Word from the Developers

Hello, A Game of Thrones: The Card Game players!

A Game of Thrones: The Card Game is a living, evolving game, and so too is the restricted list. As the card pool grows and the metagame changes, the restricted list is a tool that is used with the ultimate purpose of promoting the most interesting, engaging, and enjoyable playing and deckbuilding environment. Sometimes, there will be a need to add cards to the list, but at other times, as we can see with this latest update, removing cards from the list can be just as powerful an approach.

The North American Championship Joust event at Gen Con Indy 2013 was dominated by House Martell, with House Greyjoy making a strong showing as well. At the other end of the spectrum, House Stark – usually a fan favorite – was under-represented in the field. Our evaluation of the post-Gen Con Joust environment led to the decision to free a handful of cards from the restricted list and, in the process, bolster the Houses that were chasing the leaders at Nationals. To this end, the cards Bear Island (Ancient Enemies, 31), No Quarter (Trial by Combat, 82), Knight of Flowers (Secrets and Spies, 86), Pentoshi Manor (A Harsh Mistress, 64), and Aegon’s Hill (The Tower of the Hand, 54) have all been removed from the Joust restricted list.

With the Melee environment, a different tack was taken, as it was not a single House that dominated the field at Nationals, but rather a deck archetype that spanned multiple Houses and made excellent use of the Epic Battle event cards. In the hopes of checking this archetype without completely taking the Epic Battle cards out of consideration, we have added three Epic Battle cards to the Melee restricted list: War of Five Kings (Refugees of War, 99), Battle of the Bay (The Battle of Blackwater Bay, 119), and Battle for the Shield Islands (The Great Fleet, 39).

In the FAQ document, we have added a number of “housekeeping” entries, in anticipation of the questions that would be most common in the World Championship environment. Among these items, you’ll find a clarification on phase and round limits to address concerns over Ser Preston Greenfield (The Kingsguard, 57); if he returns himself to Shadows, his limit applies across all copies of his card. We also offer a detailed explanation of the pre-game procedure for the Black Sails agenda, which can be found in the Q&A section.

Finally, in the Tourney Rules document, you can find an updated legal card sets list, which documents the environment that will be used for the World Championship tournaments.

With this update, the stage is set to determine the 2013 A Game of Thrones Joust, Melee, and Overall World Champions. We’re looking forward to seeing you there!
