Plugged-in to the East Coast

Reports from Three Stops on the Plugged-in Tour for Android: Netrunner

Over the past four days, FFG staff were delighted to meet with hundreds of Android: Netrunner players along eight Plugged-in Tour stops in Toronto, the Pacific Northwest, and the East Coast.

During each of these events, we defended Corporate interests during challenge matches against all would-be Runners, watched the drama of the tour’s tournaments unfold, and collected the latest votes cast to decide the fates of the two potential Runner IDs: The Collective and Laramy Fisk.

Today, we’re happy to upload the results of our three Plugged-in Tour stops in Maryland and New Jersey.

Games and Stuff – Glen Burnie, MD

Our first stop along the East Coast was at Games and Stuff in Glen Burnie, MD. The turn-out was fantastic, and tournament organizer Nate Hopkins was awesome!

The field featured a strong diversity of both Runner and Corp identities.

The Runners were led by Criminals and Shapers, with Criminals taking a slight lead overall and completely dominating the Top 8. Dispossessed Ristie Andromeda (Humanity’s Shadow, 83) had a tremendous showing, earning six of the Top 8 spots. Meanwhile, Whizzard continued to add to his Top 8 showings, claiming one spot of the Top 8, while Shapers were, amazingly, completely shut out of the Top 8.

NBN led the way among the Corps, though Weyland Consortium made the strongest showing at the top, claiming five of the Top 8 places, including first.

Champion David Gearhart won the day with eighteen prestige, going 9-1 with his combination of Andromeda and Weyland Consortium.

Meanwhile, our staff participated in challenge matches throughout the event. While they did their best to protect their servers, both our staff at the event failed to prevent Michael Ayars from scoring his agendas and taking home a pair of signed, alternate art Scorched Earth cards.

We were impressed, too, by the number of alternate art cards, acrylic tokens, and playmats we saw from our Game Night Kits. It was great to see evidence that the area’s Android: Netrunner community was so deeply involved!

The staff at Games and Stuff were rock stars. They were very professional, fun, and relaxed, and our staff felt it would be impossible to speak too highly of Games and Stuff. Nate, as mentioned above, was a stellar TO, and Ed, the owner, was also a great asset. Games and Stuff rocked all around!

Jester’s Playhouse – Northfield, NJ

On Saturday, we headed to Jester’s Playhouse in Northfield, NJ where we met more players, talked a lot of Android: Netrunner, and played some great matches. Players had a great time, and everyone left excited.

Again, Criminals and Shapers led the pack among the Runners. Shapers had a slight lead when the event got underway, but once again it was the Criminals and Andromeda who dominated, claiming half of the Top 8. Though the Anarchs weren’t as well represented throughout the tournament, two of them found their way into the Top 8, and one of them took first.

The Corps were split fairly evenly, with Weyland Consortium leading the early pack, NBN taking most of the seats in the Top 8, and Haas-Bioroid winning the day.

The tournament’s top prize went to Kyle Walker, who with his Whizzard and Haas-Bioroid: Engineering the Future decks, played against the metagame to go 8-2 and win on tie-breakers.

Our staff really stepped up their game in challenge matches, suffering only two losses over the course of the day, and making excellent use of the upcoming Jinteki card, Sundew (Mala Tempora, 54).

Players played a lot of Android: Netrunner and had a great time. We saw one table finish both of its games in a mere fourteen minutes after the first game ended by flatline on turn two due to a Snare! followed by a Scorched Earth. The Runner, though, was an excellent sport about the loss and laughed it off. We also saw a lot of friendly matches take place while players waited for tourney rounds to finish, and all in all, it was a very fun group with which to play Android: Netrunner!

We want to thank, Rich, the owner, for a fantastic job of serving as tournament organizer during the event. He ran all the software while we judged, and his staff was eager to help in any way they could. With their help, we had very little downtime between rounds, five minutes at most, and usually less!

Finally, we saw a good number of new and less experienced players show up, and they all had a great time. The store is hoping to keep this energy going forward and plans to run a weekly Android: Netrunner league.

All Things Fun – West Berlin, NJ

Sunday, we headed over to West Berlin, NJ and All Things Fun. Here, we met another fantastic group of players who were all eager to play.

As we’ve noticed before, the Runners were led by Criminals and Shapers in nearly even numbers. Shapers took the edge in the overall field, but once again, it was the Criminals who took the edge in the Top 8, claiming half of those spots, including the number one position. Among the Corps, the field was split evenly until the Top 8, where NBN surged forward, claiming first and three other spots.

Benjamin Mason won the tournament with Andromeda and NBN: Making News, earning distinction as the only player to notch eight wins.

Throughout the day, our staff were able to run demos and challenge tables, including one very extensive demo that hooked a couple of new players into the game’s bluffs, economic battles, and cyberstruggles.

We want to thank tournament organizer Bryan Drahos and Ed, the store’s owner, for their fantastic help. With their assistance, the event went without a hitch!

More Uploads Ahead

We’ll have more coverage from this weekend’s events coming soon, as well as an update on the voting tallies, so stay tuned!
