Genocide

Whilst slaying the last of the Skeletal Warriors it issued a dire threat “Lord Kelmort DeVicious will have your heads”.  As one the party says “Who?”
We continue heading to the chasm where these creatures seem to be emanating from.  Before we go much further we are accosted by at least fifty orcs in an ambush, these are a particularly tough breed which takes more than a casual swipe from a weapon to put them down.  The party wins through but the huge quantity of arrows fired by these creatures wound us badly.  We decide to make camp for the night and unfortunately Carinne has used her spells and cannot conjure forth a Magnificent Mansion so we go old school and make a camp and ward it with spells.
The night passes uneventfully and we continue on our wanderings to eradicate the massing of humanoids.  Late in the morning we spy a lone rider moving slowly, the rider and horse look injured and we gallop towards them.  As we get closer it becomes obvious that both the rider and steed are undead and we veer away only for the duo to alter their course to intercept us.  Seeing as it is a single zombie carrying a staff with a white flag we wait for it to catch up to us thinking it is a messenger.  Sure enough a deep voice issues from the creature informing us that we are trespassing on Lord Kelmort DeVicious lands and we should leave right now.  We politely decline and the zombie and horse explode showering us in icky stuff.  Well that was entertaining!
Towards the end of the day we are passing through a hilly area and spy a couple of large humanoids at the end of a small valley, we assume they are ogres as Carinne has not charged past us to slaughter her sworn enemy (Giants).  The spotted creatures disappear behind some bushes and we motion for Galvish to do his sneaky stuff and scout ahead to see what they are up to.  He turns invisible and a few moments later we notice a large opening in the ground appear where there was none before, this is accompanied by a thump and a muffled curse.  Looks like Galvish has found a pit trap the hard way.  A couple of flaming arrows shot down from the sides of the valley ignite a fire line which cuts off Galvish from the rest of the party.  We quickly spot the archers and Taran opens a dimensional fold to appear among them, the others follow and we engage in hand to hand combat.  Once again these ogres seem a darned sight tougher than ones we had encountered a long time ago.  It is not long before Galvish is badly outnumbered and falls to the ground unconscious. We kill off the archers from one side of the valley as Carinne teleports to the other side and lines up a lightning bolt which rips through the massed rank of ogre archers. When they surround her she then calls down a fireball at ground zero to eradicate them leaving her with minor scorching.
Amongst the ogres on the ground is an ogre mage, who has been tossing spells around.  Barrigan runs down to confront him, wary of the cold shield that took Galvish out. With the last of the ogres slain, the magi decides to flee.
That night we do use the Magnificent Mansion spell where we can rest safely.
The next morning we open the door to find a staff stuck in the ground with a note tied to it.  We gingerly open the note and read a little missive from the aforementioned DeVicious: leave now blah, blah, blah, certain doom, blah, blah, blah, feel the wrath etc.  We toss the note away and it erupts into a large ball of flame.  What is it with this character and exploding messages/messengers.
Pressing on we crest a small rise and spy a wooden palisade, we retreat a small way and send our erstwhile invisible scout, Galvish, to go and find some traps and make a general reconnaissance.  A few minutes later a fireball erupts in mid air followed by a stream of arrows and a little smoke trail comes zooming back into our midst, with a scorched Galvish reappearing saying that he had been spotted, but there were plenty of tents both inside and outside the palisades walls.  Estimate of creatures to be in the hundreds.
We retreat a bit further to ponder the situation, five of us vs hundreds of them seems a bit lop sided, even with the whirling axes of Barrigan on our side.
Suddenly two portals magically appear and a mass of heavily armored ogres rush through together with the ogre mage.  The battle is joined and just as we appear to be getting the upper hand, two more portals open and goblin archers race through forming two rows and unleashing a storm of arrows.  Carinne decides it’s time for us to be hasted and we rush at the creatures slaying many each round.  Before we can kill the last of them a mass of wyverns with riders descends on us.  The riders hurl javelins which create mini lightning bolts and injure us gravely; coupled with the wyverns poisonous sting we are sorely pressed.  Galvish has succumbed to a poisonous barb and Carinne has to take time out to drain the posion to keep him alive, much like Taran had to do with Lanneus earlier.  The last of the wyverns are dealt with as are the riders but not before two more portals and many arrow firing orcs join the party.  Taran has to take a moment to heal up some of the party before he rejoins the melee.  Even though these orcs are well disciplined and heavily armed we manage to defeat them.  Once the last of the critters is taken down we decide to hightail it outta there, choosing a previous campsite to fold to so we can heal up and plot the assault on the palisade.
