The Future of Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play

How the World Championship Weekend fits into our improved Organized Play

Last week, Fantasy Flight Games proudly announced the dates for our inaugural FFG World Championship Weekend. Held from November 9th - 11th in Roseville, Minnesota, the FFG World Championship Weekend allows us to better showcase the best players of our LCGs and miniatures games.

By changing the venue for these World Championship events, we can better focus our attention on the world-class participants at these events. The FFG World Championship Weekend will see top-level players from around the globe come together for a single weekend of World Championships for each of the competitive games in our Organized Play program, and we are excited by what this development entails for its continued growth!

Local players, global community

The FFG World Championship Weekend finally allows us to add a true capstone event to Organized Play. With it, our restructured Organized Play program runs deep from its roots in local Game Nights, through Regional Championship tournaments, to National Championship events in North America and Europe, and to a truly global World Championship.

Today, we present an overview of the integrated elements of our Organized Play program, including the exciting new role as Gen Con Indy plays host to our North American Championships:

GAME NIGHTS

Game Nights are the basic building blocks upon which Fantasy Flight Games Organized Play is built. They provide players a simple way to get involved with their local gaming communities year-round. Organizers of Game Nights can run them as parts of casual leagues, informal open-play events, competitive leagues, or as tournaments.

Organizers have complete freedom when they schedule these events, and we support them with Game Night Kits that retailers can order. We currently offer Game Night Kits for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, and Dust Tactics.

While we are excited by the development of the FFG World Championship Weekend, we realize more players engage in local Game Nights. Thus, we are truly excited by some of the pending additions to our Game Nights and improvements to our Game Night Kits!

REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Enthusiastic players looking to meet other fans and competitors outside of their local scene can find them at our Regional Championships. Regional Championships are competitive events held as part of our annual tournament calendar. This year, players can compete for glory in Regional Championships for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, and Dust Tactics.

These championship events run from April to June, feature a structured format, and run at a limited number of locations each season. Winners of these prestigious events can claim more than mere glory; they boast exclusive prizes, and winners gain free entry to our FFG World Championship Weekend, along with a first-round bye.

NORTH AMERICAN AND EUROPEAN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Another step up from our Regional Championships, our North American and European National Championships are highly competitive, top-level events that draw participants from locations far and wide. These championship events feature unique, high-level prize support and provide players their final chances to win first-round byes and free entry to our FFG World Championship Weekend in November.

The 2012 North American Championships will be held at Gen Con Indy, August 16th-19th. Players will travel from great distances to compete in our tournaments for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare. In addition to first-round byes and free entry at the FFG World Championship Weekend, we’re continuing to offer Gen Con tournament winners the most imaginative prize in gaming; the North American Champion for each LCG wins the chance to work with our developers to design a card!

Furthermore, we’re truly excited by the possibilities opening up for European National Champions! Our partners from France, Germany, and Spain are arranging to send their national champions to compete at the FFG World Championship Weekend. Other countries are working on arrangements as well, and we look forward to seeing them all in Roseville, Minnesota this November!

FFG WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND

And it all comes together at the 2012 FFG World Championship Weekend.

Bringing together the best players from North America and Europe, the FFG World Championship Weekend showcases the increasingly global perspective of our Organized Play program.

Players will converge from around the globe to participate in our World Championship tournaments for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game, Warhammer: Invasion The Card Game, Dust Tactics, Dust Warfare, and X-Wing. In 2012, participants at the FFG World Championships will be able to meet and compete against the world’s best players for each of our games.

All of these tournaments are open to the general public, but Regional, North American, and European champions for each game are granted first-round byes, and free entry for the weekend.

While the World Champions for our LCGs, Dust Tactics, and Dust Warfare will win prizes and gamer glory, they also win the chance to make lasting marks upon their games.

Each LCG World Champion (including Melee, Joust, and Overall champions for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game) earns the right to work with developers to design a card of his or her choice. Once finalized, these cards are added to the games’ normal pools of cards, and in this way, World Champions are able to influence the ways the games are played and are forever immortalized as champions.

Similarly, each World Champion for Dust Tactics and Dust Warfare wins the opportunity to work with Paolo Parente and the developers to design a miniature. Furthermore, Paolo Parente and Vincent Fontaine will provide the winners with custom-painted, one-of-a-kind versions of their miniatures!

The future of Organized Play

We have been thrilled with the increased participation in our Organized Play programs, and 2012 is going to see these programs taken to new heights. The FFG World Championship Weekend is an exciting development, but it’s just part of the overall plan that starts with you, the players.
