Title: Forbidden Planet - Derby - Closing Down
Post by: CrazyFrog on 02 March 2009, 12:28:08
The FP shop in Derby is closing on the 22nd March, due to problems with the landlord demanding more money on lease extension.

Currently there is 30% of all stock (except electronic computer games)

Good news if you need to stock up on Trade Paperbacks or figures.

Will update if there discount increases.

Did everyone know this has had a reprieve? They are looking at the rent on a month by month basis and have had to lose one member of staff.

If you got some bargains at the time make sure you go back and support them now.

Its all gone, I spent over £250 (everything was 50% off) on the Friday before closing.

One of the staff members was trying to setup as his own comic shop somewhere in Derby.

And there has been rumours that Travelling Man could return to Derby.

Has it closed (again) since this news on the 25th of last month?

Maybe your £250 gave them the capital they needed!

Oh, I work in Derby, but dont read the telegraph.  +:bandhead=+::banghead:

Thanks for the link, I'll go and visit them this week, shame I've already moved my comics to mail order and Dr Who subcription online too, I really only need to visit them for a causal browse instead of weekly comic purchases.

I dropped into FP on Thursday  and talking to guys in the shop headoffice said 2 of the 3 months lease has passed and where given 1 months notice of closure.

So it looks like FP will be closing for ever at the end of June, I'm not sure if there will be more than the current 20% discount on stuff, if got a mate watching the shop during the weeks.

I think the big problem the shop had was existing customers not returning due to poor advertising and relying on word of mouth to get customers back.  If it wasnt for Carl I didnt know the shop was still open, and when I visited them they asked if I wanted my Dr Who audio CD's and monthly comics, but I'd already swaped to online yearly subscriptions because its a lot cheaper.  So if most customers have done that it will have lost them a lot of business.

Shame. It was always going to be a high risk strategy.

That part of the world is pretty well served with comic shops though with Traveling Man, FP in Nottingham (I think?) and Page 45 though but shutting a comic shop is always sad.  :(

Some of the customers from Derby have moved their standing orders to Notts and they keep them for 3 months.

Rumors are that Travelling Man could return to Derby, with FP leaving.

Will keep watching the store and hoping for big discounts again.

Hi

Traveling Man in Notts closed ages ago. Forbidden Planet in Notts didn't have a massive collection of comics last time I went, mainly computer games and figures. Had to get my copy of Arkham Horror from Traveling Man in Leeds, if you're up that way I'd recommend venturing downstairs as it's full of board games and they had some out to play when I was there.

If it's cheap figures you want, there's a new shop near the corner of Mansfield Road and the Graveyard (forest Road East) in Notts that has a big selection of unboxed secondhand ones for £2 to £5. Small shop completely rammed with goodies... In fact that area of Mansfield road has a wealth of retro stuff, one shop and an Art Gallery recently closed so they might not be there for long.

Oops sorry another Carl mistake  ::) but if you only had Page 45 you would still have better comic shops than most of the UK.

The figure shop sounds cool though, do they buy second hand stuff as well?  I could do with offloading some Flames of War and 15mm AWI armies; some painted (badly) but mainly untouched and I can quite seem to get around to ebaying them.
