The first six Descent Lieutenant Packs for Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition will soon be available at your local retailer! The first six Lieutenant Packs to be released introduce the six lieutenants from The Shadow Rune campaign, offering the overlord new and sinister powers in each lieutenant’s Plot deck. In our earlier previews, we looked closer at the Plot decks and their dark powers, beginning with Splig, Alric Farrow, and Zachareth; and continuing with Belthir, Merick Farrow and Eliza Farrow. For a deeper look at the new Descent Lieutenant Packs, download the Lieutenant Pack rulesheet (pdf, 1.1 MB) and read below learn about the heroes' options and the power of fortune tokens. A Bit of Good Fortune Descent Lieutenant Packs allow the overlord to harness the talents of his greatest agents in nearly any quest. Each lieutenant comes with a ten-card Plot deck, introducing deadly new abilities for the overlord including the potential to summon his lieutenant into a quest as an agent. The overlord is not alone in benefiting from these Lieutenant Packs, however. The hero players can also receive the benefit of new fortune tokens. Whenever the overlord triggers a Plot card during a quest by spending threat tokens, the threat tokens are converted to fortune tokens, which are distributed evenly between the heroes. These fortune tokens can be used in a variety of ways. A hero can spend one fortune token to either recover one fatigue or reroll one of his dice, whether the die was rolled during an attack, on the defense, or as part of an attribute test. If a hero has saved two fortune tokens, however, they can be spent to either perform one additional action during a turn, or to draw one additional Shop Item card when shopping in the campaign. Although the heroes cannot control when they’ll receive fortune tokens, they will want to consider when is the best time to use them to counter the overlord’s minions and battle his schemes in every corner of Terrinoth. In our example, the overlord is using Splig’s Plot deck – Goblin Uprising. In this quest, your heroes must battle to destroy a master monster, while the overlord attempts to let that monster escape from the map. The overlord plays Meat Shield, after you strike at the master monster, transferring all your damage to an adjacent minion. In order to trigger this effect, however, the overlord must spend one threat token, which becomes a fortune token for the heroes to use. Even though you were denied the opportunity to destroy the overlord’s master during one hero’s turn, your new-found fortune token can still help you put an end to the overlord’s menace. Fortune tokens must be distributed evenly, which means that if a hero has one fortune token, all other heroes must have one before the first hero may receive a second one. While respecting that rule, the heroes may choose which hero will receive new fortune tokens. The heroes in the example above have two options for strategically using their fortune tokens in their quest to destroy the master monster before it escapes. You could choose to give the new fortune token to a hero who has not yet taken his turn. This hero can use the fortune token immediately to regain a fatigue, potentially allowing him to move closer and attack the master monster. Alternatively, if the hero is already within range, he will have the option to spend the fortune token after rolling attack dice to reroll any die. If a critical attack fails to connect when you roll a miss, a fortune token allows you to reroll that die, giving you another chance to thwart the overlord’s plans. Alternatively, when the overlord triggers a Plot card, giving you fortune tokens, you can choose to save your fortune tokens for a more opportune moment. By enduring the overlord’s Plot card without responding immediately, you will have the opportunity to save your fortune tokens, and use them later to greater effect. By spending two fortune tokens at a later point, your hero can take another action on his turn, which can prove the difference between victory and defeat. Whether you use the extra action to sprint to your objectives, or to attack a monster an additional time, you can be sure that your fortune tokens will not be spent in vain. The choice to save your fortune tokens or spend them immediately must be weighed carefully as you decide how best to oppose the overlord and his lieutenants.
