Protect the King

The Kingsguard Chapter Pack is Now Available for A Game of Thrones

“The Kingsguard does not flee.”

–Ser Gerold Hightower, A Game of Thrones

The life of a monarch in Westeros is fraught with danger, with assassination a nearly constant threat. Although the knights of the Kingsguard ostensibly serve the ruler on the Iron Throne, all too often they pursue their own agenda, or the agenda of one of the other powers behind the throne. You just have to ensure that the royal guard is composed of men who will serve your interests, rather than your opponent’s. Appoint your protectors with The Kingsguard Chapter Pack, now available at your local retailer for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game!

Loyal to a True Queen

Ser Barristan Selmy (The Kingsguard, 53) may have been the most renowned Knight to serve Daenerys Targaryen as a member of her Queensguard, but he was not the first. Ser Jorah Mormont (The Kingsguard, 51) followed Daenerys since she first met Khal Drogo, and with his new shadows version, he can protect her better than ever before. This version of Ser Jorah Mormont possesses all three challenge icons, like his other versions, but his Ally and Traitor traits have been replaced with a more honorable and useful trait: Queensguard.

Ser Jorah Mormont also holds the shadows crest, which means that he can benefit from both Ser Barristan Selmy’s special ability, as well as the plot text of On My Oath (The Kingsguard, 60). Although Ser Jorah can be put into shadows normally, if you don’t want to pay the gold, his ability might prove helpful. Ser Jorah Mormont’s ability reads, “If Ser Jorah Mormont is discarded from your hand, put him into shadows instead. Then, draw 1 card.” Whenever anyone discards Ser Jorah Mormont from your hand, not only can you put him into shadows for free, you’ll also replenish your hand by drawing a card to replace him.

You can leave Ser Jorah Mormont in your hand, in hopes that he’ll be chosen by an opponent for intrigue claim, but if you’re impatient or desperately need him on the field of battle, you may be able to get him into play quicker with the help of Ser Raymun Darry (The Banners Gather, 16). Ser Raymun allows you to discard a card from your hand in order to put an attachment into play, as long as the attachment’s cost is equal or lower than the number of Bannerman characters you have in play. By discarding Ser Jorah Mormont to put an attachment into play via Ser Raymun Darry, Ser Jorah will actually go into shadows, allowing you to draw a card as well.

The Lion’s Pride

Despite their ideals, the Kingsguard truly serves power, and no single Lord held more power in King’s Landing than Tywin Lannister (The Kingsguard, 45), the ruthless leader of House Lannister. The new version of Tywin Lannister features a high STR, all three challenge icons, and Renown, making him a powerful leader. Tywin Lannister is certainly a fearsome foe, but if you can activate his special ability, he may become nearly unstoppable. While your opponent has more cards in hand than you, Tywin Lannister does not kneel to attack. Normally, it’s better to have more cards in hand than your opponent, but a skilled battle commander like Tywin Lannister is well-prepared to win in even the most unorthodox ways.

Tywin Lannister did not begin the theme of having fewer cards in hand than an opponent for House Lannister. The clansmen in the mountains surrounding the Vale of Arryn are well prepared to fight at a disadvantage, making the most of their limited resources. Although Tywin initially disapproved of Tyrion’s Clansman allies, he still found a use for them in his battle plans. Clansman characters often receive a benefit if you have fewer cards in hand than your opponent, enabling you to gain the upper hand with cards like Black Ears (Forging the Chain, 25) and The Burned Men (Mountains of the Moon, 45). A lord like Damon Marbrand (The Banners Gather, 7) helps you keep fewer cards in hand than your opponent, while granting you a benefit for discarding cards. With the clans of the Mountains of the Moon at your side, you can battle your way to victory with Tywin Lannister leading the way.

A White Cloak

The white cloak of the Kingsguard comes with the weight of tradition, but the knights who wear it are eager to stain it with blood and personal ambition as they serve the powers behind the throne. Can you safely enlist these dangerous men to protect your claim to the Iron Throne? The Kingsguard Chapter Pack is now available at your local retailer! Pick up your copy today.
