Announcing the Final Force Pack in the Echoes of the Force Cycle

“Your father was seduced by the dark side of the Force. He ceased to be Anakin Skywalker and became Darth Vader. When that happened, the good man who was your father was destroyed.”
–Obi-Wan Kenobi, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi

Fantasy Flight Games is proud to announce Darkness and Light, the final Force Pack in the Echoes of the Force cycle for Star Wars™: The Card Game!

The Force is a powerful source of energy, divided between dark and light, and as you draw upon it, you’ll discover even more of the its ability to empower and defend.

Darkness and Light opens the path for both dark and light sides to grow strong with the Force. You can bring new stability to Fighter decks with the Imperial Navy or explore the schemes and intrigues within Jabba’s Palace. Whether you unlock the terrifying power of a Sith cult or impersonate a deity to muster native support on the forest moon of Endor, new strategies await every affiliation in this Force Pack.

The Jedi of the galaxy mainly concern themselves with hiding from agents of the dark side and protecting the innocent. No objective set shows the Jedi’s devotion to protection and defense better than the new Jedi objective set from Darkness and Light: A Deep Commitment.

Commitment to the Future

In Star Wars: The Card Game, shields offer a versatile buffer against your opponent’s attacks, whether by blocking a critical point of damage or keeping your units from being focused by an opponent’s tactics icon. Anytime your units or objectives are shielded, your opponent will have trouble successfully dealing damage, and with the A Deep Commitment objective set, the Jedi offer even more uses for your shields.

The objective of this set, A Deep Commitment (Darkness and Light, 611), immediately grants an additional ability to your shielded units by granting each of your shielded units an additional Force icon during the Force struggle. Since the Shielding keyword can only shield a unit participating in a conflict, you’ll need to look outside of just the Shielding keyword to gain the power of A Deep Commitment. Fortunately, the light side possesses a host of cards that grant shields, ranging from Fleeing the Empire (Core Set, 56) to the Protection fate card (Assault on Echo Base, 256), and this objective set offers even more ways to use and retain shields.

Normally, a shield lasts one turn. If it is not used, it is discarded during the refresh phase. But that all changes with the introduction of two ET-74 Communication Droids (Darkness and Light, 613). There are two copies of this Droid in the objective set, and each possesses the ability to make your shields last far longer than they would otherwise. By focusing the ET-74 Communication Droid after you remove or discard a shield from a unit, you can place that same shield on a different friendly unit. You can trigger this Reaction when a unit loses a shield in combat to place it on a different unit, or when you refresh and remove shields to make sure you keep your shields exactly where you want them: protecting your units.

You’ll find other new uses for shields with Ferus Olin (Darkness and Light, 612), a Force User and a former Jedi Padawan. Ferus left the Jedi Order, but he spent his life helping to hide Force sensitive beings from the reach of Darth Vader. A skilled and multi-purposed Character, Ferus has an even spread of combat icons, making him equally suited for attack or defense. He also possesses the Shielding keyword, allowing him to protect both himself and those who enter combat alongside him. Ferus’s ability, however, offers another way for you to use shields. As an Interrupt, you can remove a shield from Ferus to cancel any event card! With the help of the ET-74 Communication Droids, you can keep Ferus fully shielded and ready to cancel any tricks the dark side might have waiting for you.

Sometimes the best path to defense is a strong attack, and you’ll find a way to make your attacks more successful with the Asteroid Base (Darkness and Light, 614). This enhancement provides a resource, but more importantly, it allows you to remove a shield from a unit to give that unit a  or a  until the end of the phase. Whether your units need to attack or defend against the dark side, the Asteroid Base can give you the combat icons you need. Even better, this ability is triggered as an Action, meaning you can wait until after the edge battle before you decide if you need extra combat icons or shields.

If all you need is more fuel for your shield effects, however, look no further than Force Barrier (Darkness and Light, 615). This Jedi event allows you to place one shield on each of your unshielded units and objectives. Not only will this surplus of shields protect you against damage and enemy tactics, it gives you the tools you need to cancel events with Ferus or stage a punishing attack via Asteroid Base. Although some of those shields may disappear after your refresh phase, the ET-74 Communication Droids ensure that at least some of those shields remain, protecting your units and remaining a thorn in the side of the forces of darkness.

The Force Will Be with You

The power of the Jedi is great in both protection and wisdom, but the dark side is strong as well. Where will you fall on the path between Darkness and Light? Prepare for the conclusion of the Echoes of the Force cycle, and look for Darkness and Light in the second quarter of 2014!
