Title: Tiki's Planar Sandbox
Post by: morgalahan on 25 September 2009, 14:48:19
So. There's isn't an official thread for this upcoming adventure yet, so I made a tiny little thread for the hell of it, to discuss character ideas for THIS game, and not inundate the play-by-post one with irrelevant material.

I already have my character idea semi-firmly locked down. I'm playing a character who will appear to be one thing, but is actually something else completely different. I'm playing a changeling/doppelganger, who will appear to be an eladrin most of the time. We will start play with everyone else knowing my character as something approximating an eladrin rogue, who is a wine and rare beverage merchant. She is in reality a doppelganger, but she will not be showing her true face to anyone else unless there is some pressing reason she HAS to, or if there is a deep bond of trust between her and the other player characters. So, I'm happy for you as fellow players to know what race she is, and that she's an assassin. But your characters won't know, until it's revealed somehow via roleplaying during the game.
I was actually considering trying to make everyone think that I was playing an eladrin rogue, but it's just too much trouble to try and conceal something from players as well as characters all the time. I'll just trust that everyone knows not to metagame :)

I havent written up the entire character sheet yet, as I'm still working out some things with our illustrious DM, but I HAVE painted a rough picture of her in her true form so far :D I'll paint the eladrin form as well, so you have a better idea of what she'll look like most of the time :P

So, if anyone else wants to post about their characters...

So I guess my enthusiasm was a little over the top then, since no one else seems to want to post here -_-

Dont fret I am still working on my character though I think it will be either the one from for the Raven Queen or a hybrid Fighter Beast Ranger. Its just a bit harder to do without a subscription to insider.

I have a mental picture of a female dwarf in Scythian type gear galloping along whilst losing arrows behind her at perusing Drake.

Er, thought I just replied to this already. Weird. Anyway;
Just to remind you, case there's confusion. This would be the Wednesday planar-campaign that is being referenced, rather than the simple online one.

If you are interested in the wednesday game, you're welcome. If you are giving thought to playing a Dwarf, pm me with any character info you have already decided on, specific or general.

Yuh. What Tiki said, this is the pen-and-paper game :) Unlike Arnu, I havent already done 6 pages of character sheet, although I'm tempted to ;) I've painted my changeling in her 'natural' form already, and am getting on with the eladrin form, which she'll be wearing as her favorite outfit for the majority of the time. Hehehe

Have begun the process for the sandbox character I wish to play.  Also got one for my OH.  Just got to upgrade them to the right level as I don't have the character builder yet.

Sweet pic there, most chilling of sights. (not the squirrel, the drawing,  The squirrrel is just disturbing).

Oh lord, really. I havent painted anything since this really. My will-to-art has been sapped by something. Besides, your comment about me being a chibi drow has earned eternal enmity. I wouldnt paint your characters after that, not a chance!  +:nono=+::nono: +:laughing7=+::laughing7:

Anyway, I'm looking forward to this.

I may draw and paint one for other people, but drow really don't belong in chibi format.

The Drow themselves likely believe so, but karmicly, it is their fate.

Hmm, indeed, I can see that arched purple eyebrow in my mind's eye even as I type. We both ended up with hellishly serious primaries, and laid back cuter secondaries.

I can just see you doing that too Dust  ;D

Tikki, whats the magic item limit on the sandbox?  Will get mine and chelltigers' characters to a point where (should he be so kind) Dust could copy to his lovley Insider program up to level..  Will have to work on OH to purchase the full beast.

Title: Re: Tiki's Planar Sandbox
Post by: Snakes in the Tiki Lounge on 16 October 2009, 16:15:02
You get; A level 12, a level 11, and a level 10 item of your choice, essentially. You also get the same amount of gold as a level 10 item.

That's as standard.

HOWEVER, I am reasonably happy to allow you to 'cash in' any or all of the three, on a direct basis, and basically re-purchase more items. For example, if instead of having a 12, 11 and 10, you pick a 12, 11 and a 5, you could probably afford two or three extra low-level magic items.

Feel free to buy anything official that you can afford, up to and including mounts and lair items, though the latter might be rather a risk to buy before you know anything about what's going on! :)

Title: Re: Tiki's Planar Sandbox
Post by: morgalahan on 16 October 2009, 18:44:45
Oh goodie. I already have a shopping list, I just need to see if I can afford everything...I'm happy to wait for the gold gained in-game to purchase some of the things I want. A Handy Haversack...mmm, lovely. Some healing potions? Must haves. I may get a much lower level weapon so that I have enough for all the goodies I want ;) After all, assassins are particularly good at dealing damage with ANY weapon, never mind a specific magic weapon. Ah! I remembered what I want! That awesome gauntlet of awesomeness that allows you to draw a +1 magical dagger from it. That coupled with quick draw makes from some major killing action. Dibs!

Morg - Thing to remember Re: Assassins

They can EITHER use their weapon's magical properties, ie, vicious, vorpal, vanguard etc, and it's enhancement bonuses...OR channel it through their 'Ki focus'. Currently, and for a little while yet, Ki Focuses merely give enhancement bonus and +1d6 per plus of enhancement...BUT you can use it with any weapon you pick up, simple, martial, improvised, etc.

So, if you wanted a variety of magic weapons and to have any money left for other gear, I'd personally recommend picking up mundane weapons and enchanting your 'inner essance' instead, giving you a +2 or 3 at this point, to everything from quick-drawn daggers to table legs. (It's pretty much the idea behind my quick-drawing Drow Assassin and her laundry list of pointy things.)

Bracers of Infinite Blades Level 11+
With these metal guards, you have an arsenal at your disposal
at all times.
Lvl 11 9,000 gp Lvl 16 45,000 gp
Item Slot: Arms
Property: You can draw a +2 dagger from these bracers as
though drawing it from a sheath. A drawn dagger disappears
at the end of your turn. These bracers can also be
crafted to supply other light thrown weapons, such as
shuriken.
Level 16: +4 dagger.

So, while I find these bracers really really cool, you're saying that I could be just as better off having lots and lots of mundane weapons scattered around my person at all times and using them, rather than wasting money/item slots on these?

I think I sort of understand ki focus. I have a magical supply of energy within me that I can use to enchant any weapon I pick up and use. I can do this every round and treat the weapon I imbue with ki energy as a magical weapon in that regard? But I can't use the ki energy and the weapons own magical properties at the same time.

Post by: Snakes in the Tiki Lounge on 17 October 2009, 01:47:44
They are very nice bracers indeed. Pretty much gold-dust to a Knife-throwing rogue. To an assassin, there is a decision to be made.

Yes, you've pretty much got it. At the moment, however, beyond the enhancement bonus, you won't be getting anything else on your weapon attacks via Ki, because there are no special Ki enchantments yet. So only ever +1d6 on a crit, no properties or etc.
It can be an option to keep a magic item or etc instead.

You could, as an option, focus on the bracers as your main item and main weapon. In that case, I'd recommend picking up a lower level version of your Ki focus, just for those 'in case' kind of situations. A level 1 magic item, for example, really doesn't cost much at all by this level. :)

Title: Re: Tiki's Planar Sandbox
Post by: morgalahan on 17 October 2009, 02:05:16
Ok, right, so if I have a magical weapon +3 for example, and I used ki focus with it on an attack, I would ignore the special particulars of it (what it does on a critical, it's property for example) and only gain the +1d6 on a critical hit. Would I get to use the +3 to hit bonus with the ki focus as well?

I'm actually making the character now, and ostensibly taking certain feats. I would like to know at some point how many feat slots you want me to save for racial feats. At the moment I have 2 assassin feats, and a multiclass feat. Thats 3 out of 7. I'd like to take Quick Draw, possibly Linguist and Perception or Thievery training. But I need to know. :(

BTW, I've found a multiclass feat in Arcane Power which saves me a feat (namely Ritual Caster) and gives me training in Arcana and the wizards Ritual Caster class feature

LEARNED SPELLCASTER
[MULTICLASS WIZARD]
Prerequisite: Int 13, Wis 13
Benefit: You gain training in the Arcana skill, the Nature skill, or the Religion skill.
You gain the wizard 's Ritual Casting class feature.

Would you say that, as it gives me the ritual caster class feature, and not just the ritual caster feat, that it gives me the wizards spellbook and base amount of rituals learned at 1st, 5th and 11th level?

The Ki focus is basically a weapon in and of itself. If you had a +2 ki focus and a +3 greatsword with the vanguard property, you would have a choice of which to use on any given attack. If you used the Ki focus with the sword, it would count as a +2, and have no other properties besides doing +2d6 on a crit.
If you used the swords enchantment, you would instead have the full +3 and all of the properties as normal.

As to other questions, well. :)

NOTE - All of you are level 11, which means quite simply, you are very powerful people. You are, quite literally, on the cusp of becoming living legends, perhaps.

If and when any of you have any ideas reguarding background, feel free to pm them to me. You never know, it might get worked in, or you may even get freebies.

Nah, thread may live. Just making sure people know where to look for any official skinny.

If you want to start further discussions specifically relating to the setting you can if you like post them in the subforum, of course, but that's your call on where you believe would be most appropriate for the topic. :)

So, scribbling up some ideas. Places you could end up, factions related to said planes, etc.
Some of this stuff really excites me. This could, I think, be very cool.

I'm officially starting to be as excited as I am intimidated, I think. :)

Just to clarify; There's a game I'm planning sandbox style, to take place on Wednesdays at Spirit Games. There's also a seperate play-by-post game, (theoretically same multiverse and general timescale) but that will be more-or-less just a simple knock-around dungeon affair.

If there's any confusion, you wouldn't be the first...
That said, you're welcome to join either.
