I expect the first session will be character creation and then an intro bit.
I can do pre-gen characters if anyone wants that.

If everyone can vote by the 12th August that will give me time to prepare the game. My preference is for one of the British settings as I haven't run those eras in a while.

Voted, but it looks like it's going to be close.

I have an old 3rd ed rulebook knocking around. Let me know if I need to sort myself out with another edition before we start.

I have a copy of the 5th Edition rule-set, not sure of the changes from 3rd.

As far as I know later revisions were just collations of additional material/rules added over the years rather than complete re-writes but I will let Paul M answer that one as he has better knowledge than me on this.

That's why I thought too. Even 7th edition claims to be compatible with all previous editions.

I'll wait to hear what the other Paul has to say before splashing out on new rulebooks.

3rd - 6th are almost identical

I have mostly used 5th and 5.6.1(the hardback) so have a spare rule book if needed. D20 Cthulhu I didn't like.

I have the new 7th edition and may run under those rules.

The biggest difference is that rolled Characteristics (STR DEX etc,) are x5 to make them percentile like the rest of the skills and then the 1/2 and 1/5 values are auto created to give you your good success and extreme success %. So there is a lot less of the calculations needed under the old rules when the DM says "save against 4x DEX for example."

The pdf character sheets are also autocalc using java so you just put your stats and age in and it works out build/damage bonus/HP/San etc.

http://www.chaosium.com/cthulhu-character-sheets/

There is a quickstart guide PDF as well for V7 so new rulebooks wouldn't really be needed.

OK Gaslight it is then.

Feel free to consider/role up your characters.
I will run in 7th Ed but if you need create them in 3rd-6th I can convert them easily.

The game is set in London circa 1895 (summer) in search of a missing son of a minor nobleman.
One character needs to have a hook to the plot. So a young (late 20's)rich character could have a connection to the missing man(school friend or sharing a London club). An older character might know the father. Or perhaps you are all a group of "professional" investigators.

I do also have some pre-gen characters for the scenario we can use.

Aubury Bland esq - 33 - man about town.

Dr James Whittles-Cole - 32 - Physician

Lawrence Clements Downing - 29 - Academic

Captain Marcus Lasher (ret) - 34 - Former Officer

I have put together a skeleton character sheet for Alice Cornwallis, a 29 year old professional occult skeptic and debunker. She has a credit rating of 50.

Would she do for the hook?

Carl.

Yes that will work as you'll be the right social class. As a friend and/or relative of the missing man.
Might have to bring you in after the initial scene as it's in a gentleman's club where you wouldn't be invited.
