The Hands of a Healer

A preview of the third Adventure Pack for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game

Alas! if he should die. Would that there were kings in Gondor, as there were once upon a time, they say! For it is said in old lore: The hands of the king are the hands of a healer.
     –
Ioreth, The Return of the King

After the ferocious battles of Conflict at the Carrock, the heroes of Middle-earth resume their journeys down the Anduin Valley in search of Gollum when they come upon an ally in need of aid. The third Adventure Pack for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, A Journey to Rhosgobel finds the great eagle Wilyador lying grievously wounded, struck by a goblin hunter’s poisoned arrow, and injured beyond the heroes’ ability to heal him.

A Journey to Rhosgobel is a race against death as the great eagle’s condition continues to worsen, and the heroes of Middle-earth must seek the assistance of Radagast at his home in Rhosgobel.

A time to kill, a time to heal

Each Adventure Pack in the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle introduces a new scenario with unique obstacles for players to overcome. Strategies that excel in combat may not excel in A Journey to Rhosgobel, and different heroes are likely to shine in this dramatic scenario. Players must work together to keep Wilyador from perishing while poison continues to course through his body.

One of the exciting aspects of the scenario structure of The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game is the ability to introduce a new narrative structure and a new encounter focus with each Adventure Pack. This means that while some cards and strategies might not provide critical assistance in a melee against trolls, they may prove tremendously useful in a scenario, like that of A Journey to Rhosgobel, that focuses on assisting others, rather than jumping into battle with fearsome enemies.

Glorfindel, for example, might take a commanding position among the heroes of Middle-earth as they push toward Rhosgobel. While players often rely upon Daughter of the Nimrodel to heal their heroes, Wilyador can only be healed by card effects that can heal an ally. Cards like Self Preservation and Lore of Imladris can heal allies, but players need to be able to draw them in time for them to have any effect. Glorfindel provides players the ability to heal allies from the first turn, offering consistent assistance to the fallen eagle.

Additionally, Glorfindel’s three Willpower make him an excellent hero for completing quests, and the sooner the players reach Rhosgobel, the greater the odds are they’ll be able to help Wilyador recover from his wounds.

In The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game, each hero has his time to shine, and in A Journey to Rhosgobel, players may learn to share Ioreth’s sentiment that a great hero may be known by his mastery of healing lore.

Alliance with the eagles

The Adventure Packs of the Shadows of Mirkwood cycle continue to develop the alliance between the heroes of Middle-earth and the noble eagles. A Journey to Rhosgobel not only tasks heroes with the rescue of Wilyador, it provides players the opportunity to bring the magnificent Landroval into their fellowships.

With Sentinel and three attack, Landroval proves a mighty addition to any fellowship, especially against the dangers facing heroes on their way to Rhosgobel.

For more about the new enemies and treachery cards heroes must confront during A Journey to Rhosgobel, check back next week. Until then, join the discussions on our community forums and enjoy your journeys through Middle-earth with The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game!
