Fortress America

One Nation, Under Siege!

In the 21st century, the United States unveiled a new system of powerful lasers that provided not only a flawless defence against intercontinental missiles, but also a means to destroy enemy forces anywhere on the globe. Despite other nations' objections, the U.S. refused to dismantle its laser system. Protest gave way to fear, then to decisive action. No single country had the strength to oppose the United States, so an unprecedented coalition of governments was formed intent on neutralizing the nascent laser system. A bold plan was attack from the west, the Central American Federation from the south, and the Euro-Socialist Pact from the east. Every army dreads fighting a war on two fronts - the United States is about to face three. Will Fortress America survive? In Fortress America. two to four players take on the role of either the United States, struggling to protect itself from foreign threats, or one or more invading forces, taking the fight to U.S. soil. Will the United States fend off the attack through a combination of military might, armed partisans, and precise laser strikes? Or can the invaders swarm across the land to conquer the United States' cities and disarm its lasers?

This updated edition of the classic game features a gritty new look, revised rulebook, and over 300 detailed plastic figures. Muster your forces, arm the lasers, and defend Fortress America!

The Battle of Tours 732 AD

The year is 732 AD The Muslims control virtually all of the Iberian peninsula and have crossed the Pyrenees, taking key towns in southwestern France and forming a new province.... and getting involved in local feudal politics.

Scholars still debate on whether the Muslim army was really aiming for more conquest or actually just looking to neutralize a threat (and bring home vast amounts of Christian plunder). One thing is certain. The meeting between Abd ar-Rahman and the Frankish army under Charles (the "Mayor of the Palace" was his title at this time) would start two cycles that lasted for the next 700 years. It marked the end of Islamic expansion and the beginnings of France and the Holy Roman Empire. (Charlemagne was Charles Martel's grandson).

And it all started at Tours... Can you stop Islamic expansion and recover vast wealth? Can you overcome the infidel army and secure the growth for your faith? You decide, as two players command armies which fight very differently from each other.

Different Strokes for Different Armies. "The Battle of Tours" offers the challenge of commanding with very different styles. The Muslims are light and mobile, but fight more by small groups. The Franks are in a transition, between Roman-style "heavy infantry" and the knight of later years. The armies "feel" different to command, and the rules provide for chaos that captures the flavour of the real battle; all in a simple, easy-to-get started format, wherein failure is deadly but success can cause its own problems. You're in command, but no two games will be alike!

Mansions of Madness: House of Fears

The Story So Far

"You're goin' to be famous baby!" Max Bialer blares over the phone. "Monumental Pictures is backing this all the way. Marion Chapel herself directed this flick, and they've pulled a bottle off Gene Sonnet long enough to finish principal photography with him in the lead. Margo Sullivan's put up with him, too... they couldn't keep her away from the script! And Harvey Ensher's ran with the part that Karloff could do.

"You listen to the jabbering idiot through the earpiece, wondering when this self-proclaimed "Agent to the Stars" will stop beating his gums.

"Now the whole plot is about you, right? You and those Palooks you run with," Max presses on. "They built the whole megillah out of those whoppers from the Miskatonic Courier rag in Arkham. They dropped a ton of dough on this flick, bought out a lot of those artifacts from some of those estates that got your name in the papers. They even used photographs of you to model the costumes.

"What? No, I ain't been on the sauce! The movie's all finished and they're holding a big premiere at Marin's place. It's an estate called Whale Manor. They're holding a big screening for the studio bosses and stars from Hollywood, and really putting on the feedbag for everyone.

"No, they want the real McCoy, see? You go up there wearing the same getup you had when you did you r voodoo ghost trapper bit, put up with their hooey, pick out a flapper, and have a night of it!

"What's the movie about? Who cares?! It's called 'House of Fears.' but what difference does to make? Don't be a sap!

"Hey, now you're on the trolley! Do us a favour and walk in at ten for the publicity boys. They want to snap a few pics before they roll the film.

"Be seein' ya in the pictures, babe!"

Die Oster Insel

The game is a race with 2 different targets. Firstly, the large figures must mvoe forwards as fast as possible; and, secondly, they must be loaded with as many stones as possible - so they become heavier and more difficult to move. This arises because, with the movement of your statue you must load other statues with stones. And vice versa, because if you make your stature heavier, you must move other statues forwards. The game is over as soon as a statue has reached the finish. However, it has only won if it is heavier than the 2nd-placed one. If not, the 2nd-placed wins.

Includes English rule translation.

I saw these when I was in the shop yesterday evening with Rakshi & I rather like the look of Infiltration & of the Battle of Tours which rather responds to the lazy wargamer in me. The ability to re fight a critical battle in European history without the need to paint two armies of figures.
