World at War: Into the Breach

World at War seems to have everything. There are Cubans with SU-100s, South Africans with Oliphants, T-80s with different armour factors, and a designer who seemingly ignores logic, but there is one thing that World at War is missing. That one thing is LOTS of American tanks.

Into the Breach cures that. This expansion to The Untold Stories explores the Yank's battle on the front line in the first days of the war. Now you get to fight with metric tons of Abrams, Bradleys, infantry, and even thinly-armoured Sheridans. On the flip side of the turret, you'll fight against masses of Soviets and Polish armour.

It's great big fun, with some great big scenarios. There are 12of them to be exact, including an East German counter-attack, West Germans on defence, and Americans defending in depth, screening main forces, attacking, and counter-attacking. It's a box ful of heavy metal mayhem, just waiting or you to play it.

Into the Breach is a boxed expansion for World at War: The Untold Stories Components:
  • Two 11"x17" geomorphic mounted maps
  • 176 counters depicting Americans and the hell-raising Soviets
  • Module rules, Player aid card and scenario booklet, including twelve scenarios

Against the Odds Annual 2011: Beyond Waterloo

What if the Battle of Waterloo... never happened? It's probably history's single most famous battle, with more thousands of pages written about it than any other.

But what if it never happened? Napoleon's "100 Days" included a flurry of activity all over France and all over Europe. The armies of Blucher and Wellington happened to be the closest available to strike, and the location (a Netherlands/Belgium area which might support either side) made it particularly appropriate for "Boney" to move quickly and strike first there.

What if he had won the battle? What would have happened next? There were Russian and Austrian armies on the march, while diplomats scurried and negotiated and the French mobilized all over France.

Could Napoleon have "worked something out" and avoided St. Helena? Beyond Waterloo looks at the 100 Days in a broader focus than has ever been attempted. The whole of France and bordering countries is included, along with logistics, economics, diplomacy and the challenges both sides struggled with. Players will face decisions they've probably never made before with a "Waterloo" game. There might not be a big battle in Belgium. It's up to you to decide.

Plus: In the summer of 1921, despite multiple attempts at technical and personal sabotage, Billy Mitchell's bombers sank a German submarine, destroyer, light cruiser, defunct US battleship... and the "unsinkable" dreadnought Ostfriesland. His vocal reports of what airplanes could do to battleships lead to his court martial... but other nations were paying attention. An enclosed bonus mini-game shows one of the results.

Playing time 2-16 hours depending on scenario.

Dust Tactics: Campaign Book Zverograd

What Secrets Does The City Of Tomorrow Hold?

The year is 1947. The place is Zverograd an ultra-modern Soviet metropolis. The endless German siege has forced the mighty Soviet Union into an alliance with communist China, and where the USSR once stood now stands the Sino-Soviet Union, a powerful third column which has declared war on the Axis and Allies alike.

The relentless German march toward Moscow has come at last to Zverograd. With helicopters and burgeoning walker technology, the SSU dominates the urban warfare of Zverograd, and with landings in Alaska and Florida, the SSU had taken the war to the American homeland. For the first time in history, war has engulfed the entire world.

Dust Warfare is a miniatures game for two players set in Paolo Parente's alternative history of the Second World War. With this Campaign Book, players can field SSU units, wield the latest advancements in weaponry and furnish Axis and Allied platoons with additional walkers and abilities.

This book provides additional rules for playing out battles with the Dust miniatures. A copy of the Dust Warfare Core Rulebook is required.

Strategy and Tactics 276: Operastin Anaconda: Afghanistan 2002

Boots on the Ground ("Boots" for short) is a wargame system that simulated modern battles on the quasi-tactical level. This particular rules set is for i>Operation Anaconda, the battle fought between Coalition forces and Al Qaeda in eastern Afghanistan in March 2002. This battle was a combined US-Afghan-Coalition attempt to surround and destroy Al Qaeda forces, but the operation fell apart owing to poor command control. While technically a Coalition victory, the battle demonstrated the strengths and weaknesses of both sides.

The game uses the Boots system, which makes command-control the central feature of the design. Each player commands a combat force composed of one or more sub-commands. Those sub-commands are maneuvered by picking Command chits at random; when a Command chit is picked, that sub-command is then activated. Since players do not know the order in which those Command chits are priced, battles become chaotic fights as players strive to create and exploit opportunities

This is a two-player game, with one player commanding Coalition forces, and the other Al Qaeda. Combat in the game is quasi-tactical in that units fire at enemy targets at range. Additionally, the Coalition player has access to various types of fire support, such as airstrikes. However, owing to the chaotic nature of the battle fire support, as well as various reinforcements appear at random. The Al Qaeda player has the advantage of his units being deployed faced down so that the Coalition player must use ISR (Intelligence-Surveillance-Reconnaissance) to reveal them. Game play becomes a tense contest between asymmetrical forces in the mountains of Afghanistan.

Hurtgen: Hell's Forest

The road to the Rhine, and beyond that, Berlin, seemed wide open in the early fall of 1944. The German armies in France had ceased being organized formations and were streaming back to the Reich in wily nily fashion, hotly pursued by the Western Allied armies as they dashed through Paris and to the borders of Germany. The First US Army (with the Ninth later on), hit the Westwall on September 12th and was destined to slog though the mud and rain for months against the fortifications and surprisingly resilient German reserves hurriedly thrown against them in a desperate bid to keep the American army off of a much German soil as possible. Additionally, lack of supply served to further restrain the American advance. Would the war be over by Christmas, or would the Germans pull off a second "Miracle of the Marne" and hold long enough to launch a counter-offensive in the west?

Hurtgen: Hell's Forest is a grand-tactical simulation of that enormous campaign. The 2240 counters in the game represent almost every formation, at company and battalion levels, which fought in the battle, including US, German, British, and even Belgian units. Infantry, armour anti-tank, reconnaissance engineer, and headquarters units are all fully represented in the counter-mix. The two map sections are an accurate representation of the battle area and were compiled from 1944 German staff maps and 1943-1944 US Army map sources. The area portrayed shows all primary and secondary roads, trails and other types of terrain in relation to their suitability for armour and infantry, along with all the villages, towns and cities that proved to be the bastions of the German defence, as well as every creek and river that couldn't be crossed by wheeled vehicles without a bridge.

There are three main scenarios representing each of the offensive periods of September, October and November. A smaller learning scenario depicts the US 28th Infantry Division's ordeal as it attempted to drive on the Roer River dams through the forest of the area. Players may also play continuously from September to the first week of December (almost 300 game turns!). The big challenge for the allied player is too see if he can reach the Rhine River months ahead of the actual date, and shorten the war considerably. Extensive supply, weather and air power rules are included.

This latest edition of the Grand Operational Simulation Series (which began with Wacht am Rhein 2) presents further refinements to the combat, artillery and supply subsystems in order to better depict tactical and operational warfare at this scale. For example rules for "Lull" periods have been added in order to allow players to speed up game play during periods of relative inactivity. These Lulls compress game play from three turns per day to one, allowing players to cover longer intervals of historic time. Other additions feature level-two entrenchments that allow the German player to create fortified bastions in German towns and cities that can better withstand Allied barrages and ground assaults, along with rules that represent the logistical nightmare faced by the Americans during much of the battle.

The orders of battle have been extensively researched in order to provide an accurate and functional depiction of the armies of both sides. The incredibly hodge podge nature of the resurrecting German army is shown through the depiction of the various rear area units and replacement army battalions that appear almost randomly throughout the game.

Game Components:
  • 2 ""2x34" Four Colour Mapsheets
  • 2240 Die-Cut Playing Pieces
  • One Rule Booklet
  • One Scenario Booklet with designer's notes and scenarios.
  • Assorted Player Aid Charts
  • Two Ten-sided Dice
  • Storage Bags
