The Road Goes Ever On and On

The FAQ for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game Has Been Updated

As your journeys lead you deeper into dark new mysteries throughout Middle-Earth, it’s important to study every scrap of knowledge you can find in order to overcome the Dark Lord’s minions. Now you can further increase your knowledge with this new version of the FAQ (pdf, 14.3 MB) for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game! To highlight the additions to this updated FAQ, here’s developer Caleb Grace:

A Word from the Developers:

Greetings, The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game players!

We give you Version 1.5 of our FAQ. This updated FAQ comes at an exciting time for our favorite cooperative Living Card Game®; three packs of the Against the Shadow cycle have already been released, and The Black Riders Saga Expansion has been announced. There’s certainly a lot to look forward to!

With each new release comes new questions, so we’ve updated our FAQ section to address them. We’ve also updated our Rule Clarification and Errata sections. These updates are present to correct small oversights and preserve the game’s long-term health.

Let's start by looking at the errata. There are only three this time, and each of them is pretty minor. The first errata is with Snow Warg (The Redhorn Gate, 27). This enemy's original wording confused some players because it was meant to deal one damage to the defending character, but its timing pre-empted the declaration of a defender. Its trigger has been changed to read, Forced: After a character is declared as a defender against Snow Warg. . .” The card now works the way it was intended.

Errata number two is in Ravens of the Mountain (The Hobbit: On the Doorstep, 11). This event was meant to give a player the ability to exhaust a hero in order to look at the top card of the encounter deck, granting the chance to place progress on the quest equal to that card's threat strength. However, the use of the word “reveal” instead of “look at” meant that players would risk triggering a negative effect if they used this card. In this new FAQ, the Ravens of the Mountain card has been given an errata, so it now reads, Action: Exhaust a hero you control to shuffle the encounter deck and look at its top card. . .” By removing the potential negative impact of “revealing” an encounter card by “looking at” it instead, this event becomes much more playable.

The final errata is on quest stage 2B of the Flies and Spiders scenario: Lost in the Dark (The Hobbit: On the Doorstep, 68). This stage instructs players to create a separate staging area for the first player using stage 3B before the other players advance to stage 4A. It did not say what to do if there were no other players in the game, so some solo players asked, “What happens to the cards in the staging area at stage 2B after I advance to stage 3A?” An errata has been issued for the card to clarify the problem. The card now reads: When Revealed: Reveal stage 3 and create a separate staging area for the first player using that stage. If there are no other players in the game, discard this stage and each card in its staging area. All other players advance to stage 4.” This makes it clear that if you are the only player in the game, you discard the previous staging area altogether after advancing to stage 3A.

We received a lot of really thoughtful questions about setting up the game, rules for attachments, enemy attacks outside of the combat phase, shadow cards for multiple attacks, and other mechanics as well. The Rule Clarification section of the FAQ has been updated to address these questions, and we trust that the information provided in FAQ 1.5 will help provide players with an even more enjoyable play experience.

Thanks, Caleb!
