New FAQ and Tournament Rules are Available for Call of Cthulhu

The 2014 Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game Regional Championship season is looming larger than Cthulhu himself, and new texts have arrived just in time for those ready to compete. Will these texts contain the information investigators need to defeat the Ancient Ones? Or is humanity doomed to fail?

As you prepare for your Regional Championship, make sure to take some time and read through the changes to the FAQ (pdf,  12 MB) and Tournament Rules (pdf,  3 MB).

A Word from the Developers

Iä Fhtagn Call of Cthulhu Players!

This FAQ update brings several cards back into players’ hands, taking them off the banned list. Additionally, a slew of new cards have been added to the restricted list, along with errata for other cards. We also have answers to rules questions that have cropped up since the last FAQ.

The card Diseased Sewer Rats was put on the Banned list in order to curb the speed of the metagame. We’ve brought the card back to the restricted list in light of several other restrictions that have been added. Additionally, we’ve brought back Magah Bird from the Dreamlands cycle, with new errata that curtails its explosiveness while still maintaining the original feel of the card.

As far as the restricted list goes we have added new cards to the list for the following reasons:

  • Interstellar Migration—This is the key card from the popular Yithian Deck that won both North American National Championships and World Championships last year. The deck was much faster and consistent than what is healthy for the game overall, and restricting this card will cause players to rethink how they build Yithian decks. As a result of this, the metagame will have room to grow and expand, creating a better experience for players

  •
  • Master of Myths and Alternative Historian—Both of these cards are currently splashed into many top decks, and often times, deck building starts on a core of these characters. Players should have to be making hard decisions about what cards are best for their deck. With the restricting of these two cards the number of viable and unique decks in the metagame will grow, making more varied and exciting games.

  •
  • Obsessive Insomniac—Obsessive Insomniac provided Miskatonic players with a free source of card draw that was extremely consistent. Restricting this card will make players choose between fast, reliable draw or other essentials that their deck needs.

  •
  • Ravager from the Deep and Temple of R’lyeh—Both of these cards allowed players to wipe away characters from the board with ease. With both of them on the restricted list, more decisions need to be made by players on how they will remove characters in their decks and how consistent they want that removal to be.

We have also removed both Descendent of Eibon and Negotium Perambulans in Tenebris from the restricted list. With the game’s current direction it was no longer necessary to keep these cards restricted.

We hope these changes will further the community’s enjoyment of the game and give players new inspiration for deckbuilding!

Sincerely,

Brad Andres and Damon Stone
