The Geek Weekly #13

by Brad Cummings

Welcome to The Geek Weekly(TGW), a weekly roundup of interesting things happening on BoardGameGeek.com. Every day hundreds of comments and posts are made on BGG; it's impossible to keep track of it all. That's why we've created TGW as a way to highlight great content from around the Geek.

We do our best to provide a varied and diverse look at BGG each week. Found a post that you think should be featured? Shoot us a Geekmail.

Thanks,
Brad

The time for spring cleaning is upon us! Chances are you have a pile of game that you may like to get rid of. Trading them with other BGG users can be a great way to pass the games along, while getting a new (to you) game to try in return. Follow these instructions to learn how to trade with other BGG users.

Spiel Des Jahres 2014 Predictions
Nominees for arguably the biggest award in board gaming (followed closely by the Golden Geek) will be coming soon. BGG users have already begun to make predictions of what may be honored. Head over to the list and make your own predictions.

Sometimes Less is More
Collecting games can be extremely satisfying and having a game on hand for every situation (like some sort of game sommelier). However, a good purge is always cathartic and helps to put things into perspective. User Slyght recently went through such a purge while moving and has explained why it was such an eye opening experience. Be sure to give it a read.

Board Games for the Visually Impaired
Board gaming is a hobby that can be enjoyed by everyone and have the affect of bringing people together. This geeklist gathers games for the visually impaired. It is a good reference that captures games that will work great for those with difficulty seeing small text and objects. This is a great reminder of the inclusivity of our hobby.

Best Looking Game Boards
I had Zombicide laid out on my table earlier this week and was astounded by how visually impressive it was. Some board games can truly be art pieces. In this thread, a few BGG users have gathered to talk about their favorite game boards. Do you have a game board you love? Be sure to add it to the discussion.

Board Game Baby Announcement
User debwentworth decided to use Scrabble to announce their pregnancy. The new Grandma and Grandpa were surprised to find that their tiles spelled their new titles. Have you ever incorporated board gaming into a major life event?

A Seasons Session
Session reports are a great way to get a first hand taste of a game without playing it yourself. I (through some fluke) have yet to play Seasons, so this excellent session report as a great peek into the game. Be sure to check it out.

Breaking Dice: The Marvel Dice Masters Addiction
We had to include this excellent sketch capturing the current obsession with Marvel Dice Masters: Avengers vs. X-Men. Be sure to give this funny video a view.

Gaming in 1988
In this geeklist, user Alexander Beetle is seeking recommendations for a game from 1988. Have a favorite? Be sure to add to the list. I sadly was still in diapers in '88, so I am not too knowledgable on games from that year. This is a good reminder of the power of the BGG database, allowing you to see the year each game was published. It could be fun to find board games from your birth year and other significant events.
