Smile and Wave Boys, Smile and Wave

I went to see this rock theatrical which has now started its 11th year at the Dominion theatre London.  If you’re a fan of Queen it’s a great show, the lyrics may have been ‘tweaked’ on some songs in order to make them fit into the story.  The audience participant is great with lots of singing and arm waving at the end, including the full live version of Bo Rap which was something which Queen couldn’t even do as it really requires a full backing ensemble.

The story is set in the future were thanks to the likes of Simon Cowell the music has become boring and manufactured (just like now) and rock music has disappeared.  1 visionary dreams of ancient mystical words called rock lyrics and with his ‘chick’ who joins him they set out to find the last remaining musical instrument on the planet (Brian May’s guitar not worthy ) which was hidden so that one day rock could return to save the world.

Everything about the production was great; including a ‘real’ band to provide all the music for the songs, no prerecord music mush.  Some of the spoken text in the story has been updated over the years to keep things modern e.g I don’t think Simon Cowell was the cause of the lose of rock at the start in 2003, some of the ‘passing’ artists gets updated and there is a brilliant reference to TOWIE which caused much clapping in the audience.  This means the version you see today is tweaked from its original form in 2003.

A big one to recommend if you can get to London, the only final words are.

There can be only one!   Rock On!!!!
