“There's a carving on our gate,” said Dacey. “A woman in a bearskin, with a child in one arm suckling at her breast. In the other hand she holds a battleaxe. She's no proper lady, that one, but I always loved her.”
–George R.R. Martin, A Storm of Swords
Duty spares no one in A Harsh Mistress, the fourth Chapter Pack from Beyond the Narrow Sea for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game, now on sale at your local retailer and online on our webstore!
As the Great Houses extend their game of thrones from Westeros to the Eastern continent of Essos, A Harsh Mistress introduces nine new locations, including two new Free Cities, Myr and Tyrosh. Two plots empower the designs of unique characters who seek to live by honor and duty, and seven new characters arrive, including two powerful, unique Armies for Houses Martell and Targaryen.
We’ve already seen some of the pack’s exciting new cards in its original announcement and in two preview articles by guest writers Matt Ley and Dan Strouhal. However, if those aren’t enough to compel you to head to your local retailer right now, lead developer Damon Stone offers a look at one of the most storied cards in A Harsh Mistress.
Damon Stone on a Collaborative Card Design
At Days of Ice and Fire 2011 we had a seminar on card design where I was able to sit with attendees and go through the process I use to construct cards for A Game of Thrones: The Card Game. The design team had previously decided that we'd give the fans who attended the workshop the opportunity to design a card using the same general process. I'd insert that card into the game’s development and playtest process and release it in an upcoming Chapter Pack. A Harsh Mistress is that Chapter Pack.
We discussed many different topics, from power ranking the Houses and each of their builds, to the themes and characters that fans would like to see in future sets. With some guidance, the group decided to create a unique Stark character. They felt the card should offer a form of card advantage, but in a way particularly flavorful for Stark.
Enter Maege Mormont (A Harsh Mistress, 61). When her owner opts not to play an Agenda, Maege can return to her owner's hand to search for a Stark location and put it directly into play, albeit knelt. A number of intriguing combos present themselves with her, even subtle ones that use her to search out reducers such as Narrow Sea (Core Set, 33), Godswood (Core Set, 32), or Braavos (Valar Dohaeris, 35) to lower her cost and thin your deck, making each draw more effective.
In the books, the spiked mace-wielding grand dame of Bear Island is one of the Young Wolf’s staunchest and most trusted supporters, and her character card will be an excellent addition to many Stark decks.
Thanks, Damon!
Duty and honor have long been part of the Stark tradition. Now with A Harsh Mistress, players can look to recruit Maege Mormont to their defense of the North.
